- I figured out my NTFS woes. Apparently I had the hard drive initialized as GPT (guid partition table) vs MBR (master boot record). Macs like GPT so if you are using a hdd pulled from a macbook it's going to be GPT and I found out the hard way cloudFTP does NOT support GPT. It only supports MBR. It's easy enough to convert between the two. In disk manager just delete all the partitions off the hard drive and you can right click the drive and click convert to MBR. Then, recreate your ntfs partition and you are good to go! So what I know for sure GPT + NTFS doesn't work on cloudFTP. I'm not sure about other combinations like GPT + HFS+.
- The drawback of exFat is you can't write to it through the cloudFTP. With ntfs you can read and write using a ftp client like
FTP Client pro and actually upload files from your iOS device (like photos and movies from you camera roll, albums, or photo stream) to the usb storage device.
Filezilla works well too on a computer. So with the cloudFTP it pretty much can replace the usb camera adapter apple sells. Lets say you shoot some photos with your camera. Then you pop the sd card into a reader connected to the cloudFTP. Fire up ftp client pro on your iOS device and download the images and move them into your camera roll or do a "open in" to open the image in your favorite photo editor. Make your edits and save them back to the camera roll, and now you can upload it back to a usb storage device (maybe like a hard drive for archival) using ftp client pro.
UPDATE: 5/23/2012
- Did my first real field test with a 3 hour car trip using V12 beta firmware. It worked great streaming 2 different movies: one to the hp touchpad running android and the other to the iPad 3. The one thing that surprised me though is the battery life. I got barely over an hour of use while streaming off a 1TB hdd. Hooking up my external usb battery worked great (car usb charger would have worked fine too I'm sure), and let it run the entire trip. The quality and performance were perfect. The wife said it was like an in flight movie but with 200 movies to choose from. The only thing missing were the peanuts and cranberry juice.

I have a GPT drive with HFS+ and Linux ext4 file systems in 2 different partitions. They both work on CloudFTP.

Good to know. It might be specific to GPT + NTFS combo that causes issues.
i guess this is slightly
better than the USB drives
with wifi built in, since
you can add your own drives
of whatever size you want.
what a pain though. every
time i read about the hoops
you have to go for external
storage. it makes me glad
every single computer and
tablet i have supports USB
and even firewire out of the
box.
i've never had to worry about
storage issues, or formats or
partitions. it just works.. ha ha
glad you figured out the issues
though.

re: using the CloudFTP as a way to move your photos onto a hard drive...
This use case is *exactly* why I wanted this device. (yup, i did the kickstarter thing...)
I bought FTP on the Go PRO ($10) and was able to move photos onesey-twosey to the hard drive. Success, or so I thought.
When I tried to move an entire folder full of photos from the iPad to the disk I got "421 timeout error" messages for just about every photo I tried to move. The iPad and CloudFTP were inches away from each other on a desk...
I found that I could plug in a small USB hub and the CloudFTP would recognize that I had two drives plugged in... Now if the SDK would allow me to move content from drive D: (a CF or SD card) to a WD Passport mounted as the C: drive, that would be something!
I am eagerly awaiting the release of the SDK...
Mine's finally in the mail after ordering a month ago. Will be nice to have the kids vids available centrally from our three (!) iPads as opposed to having to sit through hours of syncing not to mention the space savings now that all the iPad apps seem to be several times larger due to retina compat,
Received my CloudFTP today. I live in the UK and it only took 3 days from order to receipt - can't fault that at all.
As thisis a new and constantly developing product, instructions are very hard to come by - the forum is a useful tool, but a well written manual is now essential.
Managed to set up Ad Hoc and Infrastructure modes (after a few attempts) and can stream HQ video from my external HD with 100's of movies on it - goodbye and good riddance to the iTunes dinosaur!
'Anonymous' - you are missing the point. This streams the files wirelessly - no need for a USB port on the tablet (which would be a complete pain if you are watching a video in the car / on the plane etc).
Unknown - if you just want to move photos from your camera to your iPad, the Eye-Fi wifi SD card is fantastic - works well in the background. Moving between devices with CloudFTP is easiest with something like iFiles.
Downloaded the Goodplayer and iFiles Apps, which work OK, but a dedicated App wouldn't be too hard to write and would be very useful.
Also doubles as an iPhone charger - could be useful in emergencies.
